Isabelle and Frank Flynn, Rosannah and Harry Weldrake -- sisters and brothers from opposite ends of Victorian society.  The Weldrakes are decadent heirs to a wealthy family of racehorse breeders; the Flynns, the illegitimate children of a notorious gypsy stallion leader and a country alehouse keeper.

When Rosannah, in typically headstrong fashion, defies convention to marry Frank, she allows an overwhelming passion to blind her to the fact that it is her social position that attracts the young bare-fist fighter.  Frank cares little for Rosannah and is reluctant to abandon his young mistress, Lizzie Newbrook, the woman he calls his true wife in the eyes of heaven.  While there are those who have their own reasons to want to put an end to this flouted intimacy, it is Frank's naive younger sister, Isabelle, who must suffer the consequences of his ambitions to becomes a gentleman.

The drama between the Weldrakes and the Flynns, played out against the richly evocative background of Sussex, England, in the 1870s, creates tensions that must finally explode into violence, bringing with it the taint of public scandal -- and a love that redeems it all.
