Giganteum, the largest of all Alliums produces beautiful, giant purple flowers that resemble lollipops. They flower early spring right when your garden needs them most, after spring flowering bulbs and before summer flowering perennials. The flowers have a diameter of as much as 15 cm wide. Giant Alliums are hardy and will re-bloom next season too. Plant them in groups of three or more bulbs for the best effect.
How to take care:
Good time to plant the bulb in Spring or Fall.
Spacing 3 Bulbs on a diameter 12” circle apart equally.
Prepare the garden bed and loosen the soil to a depth of 6".
Carefully plant the Bulbs in 6" dept level.
Water thorough soil for the first 2 weeks.
Apply a thin layer of compost each Spring to retain moisture and control weeds.
Water Bulbs during the summer if rainfall is less than 1" per week.
As a general rule –Plant Allium giganteum in good light well-drained soil at a depth of 3 times the height of the bulb. Large flowering Alliums prefer full sun, but all other Alliums will tolerate partial shade. Allium giganteum dislike been disturbed, so leave Allium giganteum for few years untouched. Divide clumps in autumn every 3-4 years of so. You can improve heavy soil by mixing in some builders sand. Place Allium giganteum bulbs with the 'nose' upward into the soil. Always water well after planting to stimulate growth. For best results, as the buds materialize, add a high potash liquid feed in early spring to fertilize. Allow foliage to die back naturally as this will send nutrients to Allium giganteum bulbs for next year’s bloom. Please note to survive harsh winters apply a mulch (straw or newspaper) over them to avoid any frost damage. Remove when all danger of frost has passed.
